How do you write an “about me” page without sounding like an arse? Well here goes.
I come from Airdrie, but live in Glasgow. Airdrieonians are my team.
I started in recruitment in 1987 (aged 21) with HMS, the largest network agency in the UK at the time. I joined Search Consultancy in 1990, when there were only around 8 staff. In 1993 I went into partnership with Bruce FitzGerald in Maxwell Bruce. From just the two of us in a single room, we grew the company rapidly to around 50 staff and 2,000 temps, assembling pc’s for IBM, and generating revenues of over £12m. In 1999 I launched Source Selection, a technical, sales and environmental recruitment agency.
After designing my first website for Source, I launched www.AlljobsUK.com in 2000 as the first comprehensive portal to every recruitment resource in the UK. In 2001, I devised and hosted the first National Online Recruitment Awards (NORAs). I left the 1Job.co.uk family in 2012, to whom I’d sold Alljobs, and I still run the NORAs.
In June 2009, I developed and launched the UK’s most popular iPhone App for recruitment UK Jobs. UK Jobs was downloaded more than any other job search application in 2009. In November 2020, I will host the 20th annual NORAs.
In 2017, I devised RECex, which is a speaking format very similar to TED Talks. We have now held a number of events, in London, Lisbon and in Austin Texas (in partnership with TAtech). More partnerships will follow.
I continue to work on a consultancy basis, notably in 2018 with Pocket Recruiter, and from 2019 working with VideoMyJob.
If you really want my opinion on any given topic (mainly recruitment), you'll almost certainly find it here.
Please browse and search my blogs at will.
